  • Bill Mattingly Memorial Scholarship

Bill Mattingly Memorial Scholarship

To encourage emerging professionals in the field with a passion for low vision, as well as to honor Bill's memory, Mattingly Low Vision provides a $2500 and $1000 scholarship annually to either an ophthalmology resident or an optometry student or resident with a demonstrated interest in the field.  A committee of low-vision faculty members and doctors assist with reviewing applications in early Spring and winners are announced each March. The Paso Del Norte Community Foundation partners with Mattingly Low Vision to disburse the funds and manage any donations made to the scholarship fund. If you have any questions about the scholarship, please contact Julie Mattingly at julie@mattinglylowvision.com or call 1-888-642-0842 ext. 4.

The scholarship was established in 2016 and continues to highlight bright stars in the field of low vision. Our application cycle runs from November to mid-January; applications are submitted through the Going Merry platform.

Are Ohio State University Resident Dr. Emily Magas and UC Berkeley Optometry Student Alisa Katherine Molina.

Dr. Magas is an Advanced Practice Fellow at OSU, combining a low vision residency (direct patient care, clinical and laboratory teaching) with additional graduate studies and research that will lead to a master degree in vision science.  She is passionate about helping underserved populations and views optometry as a service-based profession. Her thesis will be focused on vision impairment and barriers to eye care, reflecting her focus on both Low Vision Rehabilitation and Community Health Optometry.

Alisa Katherine Molina is 4th year optometry student who has strategically sought out opportunities that allow her to gain experience in the low vision field.  She completed a rotation at the Long Beach VA, served as a clinical research coordinator at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute, and even started the first-ever low vision club at UC Berkeley!
